documentary filmmaking from the ground up festival

From the Ground Up, a short film directed by Nick Deel (MFA ’19) will screen as an official selection in two summer festivals.  The film will make its debut in the Colorado International Activism Festival in Denver on July 28th and will screen in the Global Impact Film Festival in Washington DC in August.

From the Ground Up, which was funded through a Richter Scholarship, shows how a new generation of Puerto Rican farmers see an opportunity in the post-hurricanes Irma and Maria recovery to establish new ways of utilizing abundant resources to help lift a sagging economy and to assert their autonomy in the face of the US mainland.  Despite being a lush, tropical island Puerto Rico imported 85% of its food before the storms.
