"How AI is Changing the Documentary Film Process" was the topic of a recent Lunch and Learn for students in the Documentary Film Program. Professor of Practice Chris Sheridan and Assistant Professor in Computer Science William Cochran co-led the presentation with help from DFP Professor Cara Pilson.
During the 2 hour presentation and demonstration, students and faculty had a spirited conversation on how filmmakers can responsibly use AI in the making of their thesis film. The conversation also touched on areas where the use of AI can quickly become problematic.
And there is more to look forward to. Professor`s Sheridan and Cochran are already discussing ways to advance the conversation for next year.👏

We are looking forward to the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers screening of O PIONEER on Wednesday, February 5 at 7:00 p.m. at a/perture cinema.📽🙌
DFP students also have the opportunity to meet and engage with co-director Jonathan Lacocque in the Doc II Storytelling class on Wednesday from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM.
O PIONEER reckons with and redefines the American pioneer. This documentary follows three West Virginians—a blacksmith, a seamstress, and a hospital chaplain—as they creatively navigate hardship and call us to champion the pioneer within.
Narrated by lyricist and musician Kaïa Kater, the film weaves verité moments with archival footage, poetic vignettes, and dream-like animation—as Tim Hibbs, Nellie Rose Gundersen Davis, and James Morley humbly answer their calls to pioneer a way forward.
We hope to see you there!

Directed by Sidney Beeman (MFA ’22), Finding Home, follows the journey of a young Burmese immigrant, Cing Khek, and her family as they search for opportunities to build a new and better life in the conservative stronghold of West Virginia. The film depicts the ethnic diversity of the Appalachian region, the economic forces causing people to migrate to this area, and the choices individuals make to stay within the region. At its core, the film empowers a diverse cast of Appalachian citizens to reclaim their own narrative in a region that is often dominated by stereotypes.
⁉️ - A Q & A with @sidneybeemanfilm will follow the screening.
